How To Make Your Portfolio Stronger
December 20, 2020What are the common challenges for designers today?
1. Build and sell an idea
Basically every project or product that you are working on needs to solve a problem, change thinking and create a better experience. Today we are surrounded by great amount of projects, most of them remain just a theory. In the design world, we should aim to solve problems.
The best designers make a difference by telling a unique brand story and finding the right places to get their message across.
Why designers struggle along the way in selling ideas?
How to create a portfolio project that leaves a lasting impression?
More than ever there is a demand for difference and unique ideas. While 2 projects can be looking both good, the one that wins is the one which holds a better thought behind.
As creatives we often get caught into autopilot creating random things, sadly not making the needed difference.
I found out the top 4 things that can change the way you approach projects, build your portfolio and sell your idea:
2.The power of storytelling
A story makes a lasting impression. Whether you are good at writing or quote an already existing story, that adds up so much to how your project is accepted. People associate with stories more easily. If you learn how to tell the story of your project and not let it “speak for itself “like most designers do, you already have more knowledge than your competitors.
3. Branding
I guess I have spoken about this before, but how you “pack” your project makes a huge difference. Do you have your own logo? Does the portfolio page look in one way? Branding should be consistent within all your mediums- your website, printed work, portfolio, social media posts and stories and especially your cv. When people look at these and they are all connected that makes your work powerful.
4. Advice
You might be scared to do this, or don’t get an instant reply, but it is worth trying. You need to send your portfolio across to people in position who can help you structure it better. The key thing is, it is not just design even that is our main topic. Advice from a marketing professional on how to promote better can get you ages ahead. Advice from a writer on how to present it, can be worth including when speaking to clients. The more opinions you hear on the work you created - the better it will become. Don’t be afraid of judgement. You don’t necessarily need someone famous to give you advice, look for excellent experience and find your role models.
